The problem this solves

Certain core systems will not be retired any time soon; core banking, insurance and government platforms still speak SOAP, fixed-width files and older formats. A gateway sits in front, translating protocols, tidying obscure field names, and adding the caching and circuit breakers that keep a sluggish backend from dragging the website down with it. On the day the old system does go, only the gateway has to change.
